How Meditation Can Change Your Life

The last few years there has been a surge of interest in meditation. There is now a language, a understanding that something in our fast paced, overworked society needs to change yet there is still a fear of being still and listening. "I feel like I am wasting my time, I already have so much to do". This is something I hear a lot, and yes I can say (and have) that meditation gives you more time but that does not always help the overwhelmed and burnt out practitioner. I believe the misunderstanding of meditation being just another thing on our list “to do” rather than embracing the beautiful gift and freedom to just be. To be with ourselves without and expectations, anew, with open-hearted acceptance, and curiosity. Here is a little insight into how yoga and meditation has helped transform my life, and I hope this inspires you to take a few minutes in your day to pause, feel and listen.

Rather than attempting to stop our thoughts, what if we befriended them? Your mind is a vital tool for organization and survival. It truly is the most remarkable gift that we have, so why are we always at war with it?
My favourite meditation teacher, Tara Brach often states during her meditations, “this too belongs”.
Our intention is to acknowledge and accept every thought and emotion as part of us and to meet each one with compassion.

Many of us live in a state of chronic anxiety or stress and at times it can feel like a tornado of emotions. Meditation reveals that these intense emotions are both natural AND temporary. Striving for enlightenment or perfection isn’t necessary. Through regular practice we can begin to shift our awareness back to remember that in this exact moment we are safe and our nervous system is given permission to rest.

Where to start?

Prioritize your comfort. Sit, lie, stand, any place where the discomfort of your body does not get in the way from accessing your mind. Start simply by focusing on your body and breath. Our bodies are full of messages and wisdom.We often lose touch with this wisdom when we are disconnected from our body and heart. When this happens our held stress manifests in physical symptoms, which if we are not listening get louder over time. Get quiet and listen to your body.

We know that through neuroplasticity, we have the incredible ability to gradually rewire our brains and the way we think.. With a consistent practice, (10-15 minutes will do) your nervous system will have a easier time regulating, allowing you greater clarity as well as a deep understanding and trust of what your body needs. Meditation no longer becomes another thing we need to do but as engrained for our well-being as brushing our teeth.
